You probably know from reading this newsletter that I'm NOT a fan of fast food, in almost any form.  Even the "healthy" options at most fast-food places still have additives such as MSG and other chemicals that I try to stay away from most of the time.

When I travel, instead of having to resort to fast food because I'm on the road or in airports, I usually try to remember to bring handy snacks with me such as bags of almonds or other nuts, various fruits, protein bars, veggie sticks, and hard boiled eggs with mustard packs, so I don't have to give in to fast food temptations.

But most of my friends bring me back to earth and tell me "sorry Mike, I don't have time to plan and pack things like that... I'm on the road daily and sometimes I just NEED to stop somewhere fast to eat".

Ok, I get it... realistically, most of us can't always plan ahead and we often find ourselves needing to resort to fast food, and we need to decide on the healthiest options.

170 diseases caused by something you probably eat EVERY day

In the article today, we're going dive deep into the inner walls of one of the most critically important cluster of organs in your body -- your digestive system...
 
Unfortunately, many people think of their gut solely as the mechanism by which your body digests food, which is at best an extreme oversimplification, and at worst an ideology massively contributing to the health problems, fat loss struggles, and auto-immune disorders of millions world-wide.
 
In reality, your GI tract is MUCH more than a digestion center; in fact, it is quite literally your second brain as well as being "home" to roughly 70-80% of your immune system.

You see, within your gut reside roughly 100 TRILLION living bacteria…

That's more than 10 times the number of cells you have in your entire body – and maintaining the ideal ratio of "good bacteria" (known as probiotics) to "bad bacteria" is now gaining recognition as perhaps the single most important step you can take to protect your health and improve your fat loss goals.
 
In fact, there are more than 200 studies linking inadequate probiotic levels (and microbial balance in your gut) to more than 170 different diseases and health issues; here are just a few:

 • Celiac disease, leaky gut, and irritable bowel syndrome
 • Mood, psychological health, and behavioral disorders
 • Insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes
 • The common cold, influenza, and pneumonia
 • Liver diseases, such as cirrhosis and cancer
 • Eczema, atopic dermatitis, and acne
 • Chronic fatigue syndrome
 • Food and wheat allergies
 • Weight gain and obesity

To touch briefly on the weight gain and obesity consequences, virtually every study performed on the obese population analyzing gut bacteria found higher instances of "bad" bacteria and lower levels of probiotics (again, the "good" bacteria) within these individuals.

Perhaps you yourself are already experiencing some of the more advanced signs that your intestinal bacterial balance is beginning to spin out of control, such as:

 • Gas and bloating
 • Constipation and/or diarrhea
 • Acid reflux
 • Skin problems
 • Overall sickness

If you are having trouble with over-eating, keeping your portions under control, or with sugar cravings - then please read this entire email.

First, here is the simple truth. Most of us KNOW that we need to eat right if we want to stand a chance at losing body fat...

But for most of us, eating right is just not that simple. We know what to do, but we don't always do it... right?

This isn't your fault. Recent research points to fact that self control just isn't programmed into our genes. We evolved when food was scarce, so our natural instinct is to load up whenever we can.

The problem now is that food (and especially junk food) is more than abundant everywhere we look.

The final nail in the coffin is that just one act of self control (will power) causes us to lose control in other areas. So if life were all peaches and cream, will power might work. But once other stressors enters your awareness, it makes it doubly hard to stay away from those chocolate chip cookies!

However, there is hope.

The problem with yogurt (a MUST-read if you eat yogurt)

As you've probably noticed in the last couple of years, probiotics are all the rage as one of THE most important factors that helps control your immune system (an estimated 70% of your immune system resides in your gut), as well as your digestive system health (and over 170 other health conditions that can relate in some way to your gut flora).

Most people "think" they get enough health-boosting probiotics from yogurt (the average person eats yogurt almost daily).  Unfortunately, there are some problems with yogurt that you need to be aware of...

1.  First problem with yogurt:

Some brands of yogurt actually contain live cultures and some do not.  Almost all yogurts found in the US start with pasteurized milk... that's not such a problem because once the live cultures are added and the milk fermented, you once again have a live and active food that's easier to digest than regular milk and has a reduced lactose content due to the consumption of lactose by the microbes.

Sadly, some brands pasteurize the yogurt AFTER it's been fermented (cultured) which kills the beneficial probiotics.  On the other hand, most good brands of yogurt do NOT pasteurize after fermenting, so the probiotics are still alive for your benefit. 

The amount of probiotics in yogurt varies widely based on the brand and type, but I've seen estimates anywhere from 1 Billion to 6 Billion CFUs per cup.  This is decent, but low compared to some other probiotic sources we'll discuss in a bit.

The KEY is that you need to look for "live and active cultures" on the label, or another labeling that indicates the probiotics are still active.


2.  Second problem with yogurt:

Most yogurts in the US are sadly adulterated with way too many sweeteners, whether sugar, corn syrup, or artificial sweeteners.

Remember that sucralose kills probiotics, so any yogurt that's been sweetened with sucralose (aka, splenda) will most likely have a greatly reduced probiotic content or possibly even be fully dead.

And most other yogurts are produced to appease the overly aggressive sweet taste buds of American consumers, so they simply contain too much sugar to be considered healthy.

I always recommend choosing unsweetened plain yogurt or plain greek yogurt and adding your own stevia or other natural sweetener if you need extra sweetness beyond the addition of whole fruit.  Personally, I love to simply add a small scoop of Biotrust Low-Carb Vanilla protein to my plain yogurt (along with some berries and nuts) and it makes the PERFECT sweetness in my opinion!

I also personally choose FULL-fat yogurt and not all of this silly skim 0% yogurt that's out there these days.  Remember that the extra fat in full-fat yogurt satisfies your appetite and cravings so that you eat less calories later in the day.  Also, if you can find yogurt from grass-fed cows, the fat portion of the yogurt is VERY healthy and contains powerful vitamin K2 (shown to reduce heart disease risk) as well as CLA (found to reduce cancer risk and help to reduce body fat), and also omega-3 fats, which you also know are vital to your health.


3.  Third problem with yogurt:

The last problem with yogurt that I wanted to bring to your attention today is that yogurt is not necessarily the best source of probiotics, both in terms of quantity and also variety of strains.

Variety is KEY when it comes to the overall power of probiotics for your immunity and digestion.

Most yogurts only contain 3-4 strains of probiotics.  On the other hand, Kefir is a fermented dairy drink that contains anywhere from 10-20 strains of probiotics depending on the brand and type.  In addition, Lassi is an Indian style fermented dairy drink that also contains a much wider variety of strains than yogurt does.

In terms of quantity of probiotics, yogurts generally contain between 1 Billion to 5 Billion CFU's per cup, whereas most Kefir or Lassi contains anywhere from 7 Billion to 50 Billion active CFU's per cup depending on the brand and type.  Most yogurts are only cultured for 2-3 hours, whereas kefir is generally cultured for 12-16 hours, increasing it's probiotic content and making it easier for digestion.

Also, most Kefir is 99% lactose free and is by far the easiest to digest type of dairy on the market due to the "predigestion" that the active cultures perform on the kefir before you drink it.

Kefir is a GREAT addition to any smoothies that you make instead of using water or almond milk because you get the immune system and digestive system benefits of the probiotics in Kefir, which you can't get in almond milk.

Again, I personally choose FULL-FAT (for the reasons I described above with full-fat yogurt as well) when I look for a good kefir and I try to find grass-fed as well.  If I don't use kefir in smoothies, one way I like it is just simply to add a small touch of real maple syrup, vanilla, and chia seeds to a cup of kefir -- amazingly delicious snack for anytime!

Interestingly, I recently found out from their website that Lifeway brand kefir is made from grass-fed milk in ALL of their products (even though they don't include that on the labels), so the fat content in Lifeway kefir will also contain those ever so important nutrients of vitamin K2 for heart health, CLA for cancer protection and body fat reduction, and omega 3 fats for overall health.  The full-fat greek kefir by Lifeway is my favorite and I use it almost every day!

With all of this said about yogurt and kefir, please note that I do NOT drink regular commercial milk that's been pasteurized and homogenized.  It's a dead food that has harmful microscopic fat particles due to the homogenization.  On the other hand, yogurts and kefirs generally start with pasteurized milk, (but NOT homogenized), and are made alive and easier to digest again through the fermentation process.

For this reason, I choose to NEVER use commercial milk, but I use yogurt several times a week, and I use Kefir DAILY because of it's health benefits and great taste.

Lastly, if you're skeptical that ANY dairy could possibly be good for you because you've fallen for certain anti-animal food propaganda that floats around out there on the internet, here's one last fact to consider that might make vegans want to switch to vegetarians...

It's well known that in the Caucasus Mountains and other areas of eastern Europe, that natives to that area drink kefir daily throughout their lives and routinely live to over 100 years old.  And in India, fermented dairy in the form of Lassi is routinely consumed with daily meals, and they display much better health than the average American. 

Clearly, if "dairy was bad for you" as many so-called "experts" seem to like to claim, these natives in the Caucasus Mountains that drink dairy every day of their lives wouldn't be living to 100 years old!  Just shows you to beware of who you trust for your health information.

I have another article coming up soon for you about why dairy fat is being shown in many studies to PROTECT you from heart disease, despite the false propaganda you've been fed for years now about dairy fat being "deadly".  This shocks most people!  But there's a lot more to the story and I'll explain more in the next article on this topic coming soon.

Discovered - #1 cause of flab and diabetes...

I just got finished reading a new article published in the New York Times this past Wednesday, February 27th - that reviewed the details of an astounding study that was recently published.

This study, for the first time ever, conclusively pinpointed the #1 cause of type 2 diabetes and by extension, excess, stubborn weight.

They did, however, miss one incredibly important detail, which I'll explain in a second, but first, let's get to the good stuff that they DID get right.

The study showed that the link between this #1 cause of type 2 diabetes and by extension, extra, stubborn flab, was just as strong as the link between cigarettes and lung cancer.

So what is this #1 cause?

Sugar - plain and simple.

Shocked? I didn't think so.

But what WAS shocking is what this column goes on to say:

"All calories give off the same amount of energy when burned, but your body treats sugar calories differently, and that difference is damaging."

FINALLY -- someone from the mainstream media acknowledging what we've known for years, which is that not all calories are created equal… and that THE most devastating waist-expanding, artery-clogging, diabetes-causing calories you can consume comes from sugar.

HOWEVER, this study and this article miss one incredibly important detail.

It's not just plain old sugar itself that triggers your body to accumulate excess fat and causes type 2 diabetes - it's also all of the foods that our bodies quickly turn INTO sugar that does the SAME thing.

These are foods that most of us eat EVERY DAY - foods that most people THINK are healthy, but in fact are absolutely LOADED with sugar in various forms or foods such as wheat that our bodies quickly process into blood sugar as fast as pure table sugar.

It's these hidden forms of sugar that you must absolutely avoid -- they completely shut down your body's primary fat burning hormone while FORCING your body's primary fat storage hormone to overact, causing layers of unwanted fat to accumulate.

Flu-fighting SUPER berry (no, it's not goji or acai)

I think we all know that berries are good for us.

We've been told time and time again that
blueberries are high in antioxidants and other
disease-fighting nutrients. And that strawberries
are very in phytonutrients that prevent
angiogenesis (the undesirable growth of new blood
vessels around cancer cells).

So yes, eating berries is a very smart move.

But, did you that there's a lesser-known berry
that has shown time and time again to be a heavy
weight contender for preventing and fighting the
flu?

Indeed, there is.

I'll reveal its name in just a moment but first
let me illustrate its flu-fighting power with the
help of a 2002 study from the Israeli Medical
Association Journal.

This study looked at the effect of five herbal
remedies – Sambucol Black Elderberry Extract,
Sambucol Active Defense Formula and Sambucol for
Kids (with known antiviral properties), Protec
and Chizukit N (containing propolis and
Echinacea, claimed to be immune enhancers) – on
the production of cytokines, one of the main
components of the immune system.

The results of the study showed that the three
Sambucol formulations activated the healthy
immune system response by INCREASING inflammatory
and anti-inflammatory cytokines production, while
the effect of Protec and Chizukit N was much less.

The researchers concluded that Sambucol could
therefore have immuno-stimulatory properties when
administered to patients suffering from influenza
or EVEN immuno-depressed cancer and AIDS patients
who are receiving chemotherapy or other
treatments.

Pretty powerful.

But…

Once on the Sambucol website I noticed some fishy
things in their ingredient lists.

For instance, the "Sambucol for Kids" formula
contained the following:

* 1.9 g of black elderberry extract per 10ml.

* Glucose syrup, purified water, citric acid,
potassium sorbate (to retard spoilage)

Not too sure about the glucose syrup part but I
guess they need the added sweetness so that kids
will actually take this stuff.

Their "Immune Formula" contained:

* 3.8g of Black Elderberry Extract per 10ml

* Sorbitol, purified water, artificial raspberry
flavour, citric acid, potassium sorbate (to
retard spoilage).

Again, not sure about the sorbitol or artificial
flavors but at least it has decent amounts of
the REAL beneficial ingredient…

ELDERBERRY.

Just in case you didn't catch on, that's the
"secret" flu-fighting berry in question.

Before I show you another awesome study proving
elderberry's effectiveness, let's first look at
what it is exactly, shall we?

The elderberry (black elder is the most
widespread) is common across Europe, western
Asia, and northern Africa. The powerful "black
berry" is the fruit of a deciduous shrub that can
grow up to about 6 meters tall.

Now it's time to get out the science goggles…

The European black elderberries are rich dietary
sources of plant pigments and phenolic compounds
– essentially, powerful phytonutrients.

They contain the flavonols, quercetin-3-glucoside
and quercetin-3-rutinoside, and a number of
anthocyanins: a group of antioxidant compounds
responsible for the attractive red, purple, and
violet colors of many fruits, flowers,
vegetables, and also elderberries.

The anthocyanins in elderberries have been shown
in several studies to enhance the antioxidant
status in humans.

Animal and in vitro studies have also shown these
anthocyanins decrease premature cell death and
lower risks of cardiovascular complications
through anti-inflammatory and relaxant effects on
coronary arteries.

So obviously, elderberry can pack a serious
flu-fighting 1-2 punch.

In fact, a brand new 2011 study out of Germany
demonstrated a very POWERFUL dose-response effect
of elderberry liquid extract against dangerous
bacterial infections and influenza viruses.

To put these results into plain English, the more
elderberry (up to about 15% concentration) the
better the effects against 4 known bacteria and
dangerous flu viruses.

Cold or Flu? 5 things you NEED to know (Very important)

First, the flu (aka. influenza) is a virus - not
a bacteria. So if your doctor gives you
antibiotics for the flu (I don't know why they
would, but they do sometimes), then you can
intelligently pass on that.

As you may have heard, unnecessary antibiotics
damages your gut flora balance and can allow harmful
bacteria to take hold causing all sorts of health
problems after you're done with the antibiotics.

Second, since the flu is NOT a bacterial problem,
we should NOT be overusing anti-bacterial
products. Doing so only exacerbates possible
bacterial problems down the road as these little
critters can quickly adapt to our excessively
clean environments.

These harder-to-kill "super bugs" are now sadly
apparent thanks to the over-prescription of
antibiotics and other measures of excessive
cleanliness.

Third, the influenza virus is with us 365 days a year
but flu season peaks in February in the northern
hemisphere and August in the southern hemisphere.

Interestingly, this is also when we get the least
amount of sunlight (and thus vitamin D) in each
respective location.

Vitamin D is so important in this regard that
most experts believe that flu outbreaks are
CAUSED by a lack of the "sunshine vitamin".

Fourth, if the "germ theory" of disease was
correct, then every single person exposed to the
flu virus would get sick. Obviously, this is not
the case since we're all exposed to it, but only
some actually get sick.

Why?

Because what's happening inside your body is more
important than what's happening outside of it. A
clean and healthy internal environment is
inhospitable to viruses and other pathogens.
That's where proper nutrition comes into play.

I personally haven't had the flu in 15 years, and haven't
even had more than a sniffle of a cold in that time frame
too.  Nutrition really can control your outcome!

systems and are more resilient to infections like
